Ok so today I had a scary movie marathon to kind of get an idea of how their openings differentiate from other genre openings. Today I watched the following movies:
Saw II
Peace no more
Insidious
Cabin in the woods
The Purge
Sinister
I enjoyed watching all of these movies so much but my favorite opening was Saw II. The opening started off black with a blurred light that become evident of being a lightbulb. It then shows various objects in a sketchy room and creates the sense of confusion. It quickly jumps right into the plot as you see a man in a death trap and looking into a mirror while freaking out. The mise en scene of the movie was amazing. The lighting was dim, the blood looked incredibly real and all in all it was a very captivating opening.
I pitched the idea to my group of doing something somewhat similar with beginning our short film opening with a black screen as it creates a sense of mystery and to start with some hustling noises (heavy breathing, heart beat, running, etc). My group thought it sounded cool and we're going to work off that. We decided we want to revolve the film around either a serial killer or psychologically insane main character. My group and I have to further discuss it and I'll let you guys know as soon as we come up with more and/or something new.
